Apple unveils thinner 12-inch MacBook, lowers price of Apple TV

TORONTO – Apple delivered a few surprises Monday during its Apple Watch launch event, unveiling a new 12-inch MacBook with an array of new features.

The new MacBook – available for the first time in three colours; silver, space grey and gold – weighs just 2 lbs and measures 13.1 mm think, making it the thinnest MacBook ever. The new laptop also features a new touch pad dubbed “Force Touch.”

Despite the global notebook market shrinking two per cent last year, Apple’s MacBook business grew 21 per cent over the same period, according to data presented by the tech giant during the press event.

The new base model MacBook comes with a 1.1 Ghz dual-core Intel Core M processor, Intel HD 3500 graphics, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD hard drive, starting at US$1,299.

Apple also unveiled a new deal between Apple TV and HBO, touted growth in iPhone sales and Apple Pay adoption, and announced a set of tools called ResearchKit to help hospitals and research centres develop apps for patients.

It cut the price of Apple TV by $30 to $69 and is partnering with HBO to offer its stand-alone streaming service, HBO Go, on Apple devices in time for the Game of Thrones premiere April 12. It will cost $14.99 monthly.
