New York City ballet show debuts in Kelowna

KELOWNA – It’s a rare opportunity for the ballet community in the Okanagan. Ashley Bouder, a New York City ballerina, known to be one of the best in the world, will be performing at the Kelowna Community Theatre Tuesday night. The show has an Okanagan connection. The choreographer, Joshua Beamish is from Kelowna. He, along with the new CEO of Ballet Kelowna, Simone Orlando, partnered up to bring the show to Kelowna.

“Ashley Bouder’s philosophy is that she really tries to engage with younger people and really educate and show them the great history of ballet but also the artistry and athleticism of the art form,” says Orlando, who became CEO of Ballet Kelowna six months ago.

The show’s manager, Phil Chan says the show, called The Ashley Bouder Project, will showcase the history of the art form, from classics like an excerpt from Swan Lake to more modern forms of ballet.

“We are really trying to show the audience who might not necessarily have the chance to see such a diverse historical range of ballet to really see the development of the art form in its early roots up to where it is today,” says Chan.
