The beautiful icy formations of the Apostle Islands ice caves in Wisconsin will be open to the public this week.
The natural phenomenon only occurs when Mother Nature allows, with last year’s ice caves being the first time in five years the winter caves were safe enough to open to the public.
“We came close a couple of times where we thought we had enough ice,” assistant chief of interpretations Neil Howk told KBJR. But Lake Superior’s temperature wouldn’t stay consistent enough for the park to open the caves.
“The caves are like an amazing flower. It may not bloom every year,” added Howk.
On the coast of Lake Michigan, a local spotted ice mounds forming on the Lake and decided to explore.
After making the trek out onto the frozen lake, Eric LePaugh burrowed himself through a small opening only to be amazed by the beauty of the icicles hanging down into the hollow space.
“That’s the thing with Mother Nature,” LePaugh told WBPN. “You never know what she’s going to create.”
