St. Albert teacher investigated over video

EDMONTON – A junior high teacher at a St. Albert school is being investigated after an “inappropriate” video was shown to a class of students.

“It was a case of a teacher didn’t preview material, and used inappropriate material,” said Barry Wowk, superintendent of the St. Albert Protestant Separate School Board.

The video dealt with issues of sexual harassment, but Wowk would not say what exactly made the video inappropriate for the students it was shown to. Media reports have said the adult-access YouTube video featured vulgar sexual references, and was shown to a Grade 7 class.

“We will go forward and expect everyone to learn from this, and not do it again,” Wowk said.

He said the teacher was “very remorseful” after the video was shown, and brought the incident to the principal’s attention. A concerned parent also contacted the principal.

After reviewing the incident, the school board will decide what actions to take, Wowk said.

“We will be proceeding with something that we think the person can learn from,” he said. He expects the teacher to be in class on Monday.
