Valentine’s Day brings out romance for young and old

WATCH: The Valentine’s Day weekend is a big money maker for restaurants, flower shops and businesses catering to couples celebrating their love. Catherine Urquhart reports.

At the Sweet Bake Shop in Vancouver, Erin Sousa saw plenty of men come into her store yesterday.

“It’s such a marketable holiday. I think people are really getting in on that and opening their purse strings,” she says.

She’s not the only one to notice. According to a Walmart Canada survey, 60 per cent will spend money on Valentine’s Day – and those who do will spend an average of $177.

“People are filling up cupcake boxes and going crazy,” said Sousa. “The largest amount was $200: flowers, cupcakes and cotton candy.”

The day doesn’t exclude older couples from taking part. Chartwell Langley Gardens retirement community held a ceremony for six couples today who renewed their vows – including one who will be celebrating 60 years of marriage later this summer.
