HALIFAX – A downtown Halifax apartment building was partially evacuated Saturday morning after a man who possibly had a firearm threatened to harm himself or police officers.
Halifax Regional Police responded to the incident in the 1200 block of Hollis Street around 9 a.m.
The Emergency Response Team was also called in to deal with the suspect.
“They basically took over where there was possibly an armed and barricaded person,” said Staff Sgt. Bill Morris.
“They eventually talked him out of the apartment. He was taken into custody and officers then cleared the apartment. There was another female taken into custody.”
Morris said the man is known to police and that the pair is in their early 20s. He did not know the relationship between the man and woman but adds the man will likely face assault and threat charges. The 21-year-old man from Halifax will appear in court on Monday.
Several units in the apartment building were evacuated for approximately 30 minutes.
