Winnipeggers fed up with slippery roads, sidewalks

WINNIPEG — Ruts, ice and snow have been making it difficult for drivers on residential streets in various areas of the city. Above average and above zero temperatures through January produced wet and slushy roads and sidewalks. The onset of bitterly cold temperatures has turned the water into ice, leaving pedestrians to negotiate slippery sidewalks.

Some elderly pedestrians walking down Carlton St. downtown told Global News they would rather stay inside to avoid the risk of falling.

Some chiropractors in the city have noticed an increase in the number of patients with fall related injuries.

“It can be quite dangerous for our seniors, we’ve seen a number of slip and falls just walking on the sidewalk,” said Dr. Geoff Gelley.

Residents are encouraged to call 311 if they want their sidewalk or street cleared or sanded. But once the request is in, it could take up to eight days. The city said they have had 24 requests for sanding through 311 within the last two weeks.
