TORONTO – Alok Mukherjee will return as chair of the Toronto Police Services Board after the board voted Wednesday to extend his term.
The Toronto Police Association, the union representing officers, had called for his resignation recently after he shared a photo on Facebook compared the number of people killed by police officers in the United States to the victims of ISIS and Ebola. Mukherjee didn’t face any discipline for the post, and said he was just trying to generate a discussion.
Mike McCormack, the president of the TPA, had called on him to resign following the Facebook post, claiming his actions showed a clear bias towards police.
McCormack called Mukherjee “irrelevant” following the vote Wednesday afternoon.
“He’s irrelevant as far as what we’re doing. We have a bigger agenda and that’s to move forward policing and the challenges facing policing,” McCormack said. “We believe he is irrelevant and we look forward to working with some of the adults on the police services board.”
Andy Pringle was re-elected vice-chair of the police services’ board.
