Surrey Fire Service is crediting an off-duty RCMP officer for saving a young girl’s life yesterday.
A home in the 19000 block of 71st Avenue in Surrey was on fire yesterday afternoon when RCMP dog handler Sgt. Derek King saw the flames while out for a walk.
King knocked on the home’s front door – and while an elderly lady managed to get to the door, she told King her two-year-old granddaughter was trapped inside.
King went in the house, heard the child crying for help and fought through the smoke to rescue the toddler.
“It’s clear that this incident would have had a very tragic outcome, but thanks to Sgt. King’s bravery he saved a young child from serious injury or worse,” said Surrey Fire Service Chief Len Garis.
Crews are investigating the cause of the fire, but it does not appear to be suspicious.
