Safety improvements urged for road following tragic crash

It’s been less than a week since a pair of 20-year-old childhood friends died in a tragic crash northwest of Cochrane.

Nathan Wack and Jordan Fish were killed last weekend when the truck they were riding in lost control and crashed down a ravine.

The families left to mourn are now advocating for safety improvements to the road.

They’re concerned about the narrow width of the road and steep terrain.

“How many incidents have to happen there before the right thing is done?” asked Tim Leshchyshyn, Nathan’s dad.

“Whether it’s public or private, it needs to be done,” he said.

The solution is simple, said Leshchyshyn.

“That slope is going to increase very year with every rainfall – and become steeper and steeper. It needs to be like every other roadside turnout – put a guardrail there.”

The government road is leased by TransAlta, which is considering options in the wake of the tragedy.

“We would be willing to consider guardrails, a fence, and other options that come out of the process,” said Gary Woods of TransAlta.

Whatever improvements are eventually made, Tim Leshchyshyn just hopes no other family suffers the same devastating loss.

The funeral for Jordan Fish will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the Chapel of the Bells.

Nathan Wack’s funeral will be held at the same church on January 18th, at 2 p.m.
