REGINA – SaskPower has issued a scam warning to its customers. Two are currently making the rounds in the province – one by telephone and the other by email.

Officials say a customer was recently called by someone using a 1-800 number. She was told unless she provided the serial number from a pre-paid power card or VISA card, her power would be cut-off within an hour.

Problem is, pre-paid power cards are not sold in the province and SaskPower says it never asks customers to purchase pre-paid cards of any kind. In this case, the scammer was not successful.

In the other one, an email is circulating claiming to be from “SaskPower Billing.” It asks the recipient to download a zip file which in this case contains malware.

SaskPower says it does not send emails asking customers to download their statements or provide account information. Customers who access their billing online do so through their secure “MyPower Account.”

Officials say anyone who has been the target of scammers should report the incident to their local police detachment.
