B.C. preps for expected major winter storm

WATCH: The first winter storm of 2015 is about the hit many parts of BC, and drivers planning to head out are being advised to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions. Jeremy Hunka reports.

Much of British Columbia prepared for a major winter storm on Saturday, as Environment Canada upgraded a winter storm alert to a winter storm warning for the South Coast and B.C. Interior.

In Metro Vancouver, mixed rain and snow will be seen this evening, switching to snow in most locations overnight. Anywhere from just a few centimetres near the coast to more than 20 centimetres at higher elevations is possible.

“We always like to prepare as though it’s going to be a big one,” says Noel Mankey of Mainroad Contracting, who says they have a new snowplow never before seen in the Lower Mainland that can clear 2.5 lanes at once.

“We’ve got a full crew out and multiple shifts to ensure trucks are out at all times.”

Throughout the Interior, it’s expected total snowfall will reach up to 30 centimetres by Monday night. Officials are warning anyone considering travelling through mountain passes – including the Okanagan Connector, Coquihalla Highway and Allison Pass – to hold off until conditions improve.

“The passes of the Southern interior and the south coast through about Tuesday are going to be treacherous,” says David Jones with Environment Canada.

“We would suggest no one travel unless they absolutely have to.”
