MONTREAL – Firefighters spent the better part of Friday battling two overnight fires.
The first fire ignited around 6:30 p.m. when a three storey residential building caught fire on Saint-Joseph boulevard.
According to officials, the blaze started between the second and third floors, possibly by someone smoking a cigarette outside.
The smoker apparently dropped the cigarette between the balcony and the wall and the fire quickly spread up the walls to the roof.
The roof partially collapsed in the front of the building, forcing 16 people from their homes.
There were no injuries.
The second fire started just after 7:30 p.m., when firefighters were called to a three storey building on Sainte-Catherine street East.
The building is commercial on the ground floor, but residential on the upper floors.
One firefighter was injured when he fell through a hole in the building.
He suffered injuries to his upper body.
