Police identify male suspect in Capilano University arson

UPDATE: Police have released video of a male suspect in the Jan.2 arson at Capilano University. Anyone who can identify the man is asked to contact North Vancouver RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Previous story:

North Vancouver RCMP are searching for suspects in a break-in and arson at Capilano University this morning.

Emergency crews were called to the university library shortly after midnight.

A sprinkler had been activated, sending water down on a deliberately set fire inside a cabinet.

The fire was contained to the library area but water damage to the surrounding area and books is extensive.

“On arrival, we noticed smoke in the library,” says Ast. Fire Chief Dave Burgess. “There was a small fire and the sprinkler had it deactivated. The sprinkler controlled the fire and kept it to the area of origin.”

Also a safe in the library was removed from the wall and pried open. It is unknown at this time if any property is missing.

They will examine video surveillance in an effort to identify any potential suspects.

The University says they will be assessing the damage, but do not anticipate any class disruptions today.
