CALGARY – The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds won a record 13th McCrae Cup in women’s field hockey on Sunday with a 3-1 win over the University of Calgary Dinos.

Poonam Sandhu scored the winner for UBC, while championship MVP Robyn Pendleton added some insurance with an extra goal. Sara McManus also scored for the Thunderbirds.

“The championship trophy is the one I really wanted, and it’s great to cap off my career with a win at nationals,” said Pendleton, who was also named CIS player of the year before the tournament. “It couldn’t have gone down a better way.”

“We called my play, which I was stoked about, and Miranda Mann just had a good shot from the top and I found the ball, and it was just wide open right there,” said Sandhu. “The goalie came out pretty far and I just got it past her.”

Earlier, rookie Erin Houle scored all three goals as the No. 4 University of Guelph Gryphons captured the bronze medal with a 3-0 win over the top-seeded University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
