HALIFAX – The impact of last week’s torrential rains and flooding are being felt by a Christmas hamper campaign in Fall River.

But that area is still recovering from the effects of last week’s downpour, which caused damage to some buildings and losses for some businesses.

Treasurer and councilor Barry Dalrymple said financial donations from businesses make up 80 per cent of the Christmas hamper campaign.

However, because many businesses are still dealing with the flooding aftermath, the decision was made not to ask them for donations.

“It’s a respect for what they  have done for us and for the community over the years,” Dalrymple said.

“Now they’re in a tough period. The flooding was so extensive and so many of the businesses were hit so hard. It’s not fair for us to put that on them this year.”

Dalrymple said the organization is dipping into its reserve, which is approximately $6,000, to make up the difference and to ensure the Christmas hampers are delivered to those who need them.

“We will use [the reserve]… to make Christmas what it should be for families and kids in the area,” he said.

Organizer Stephanie Dube said the campaign handed out 102 boxes last year; she expects to hand out approximately 100 boxes this year.

The boxes will be delivered this Saturday.
