Story of meeting a stranger a day to be made into a documentary

The title of the documentary will be 'Not a Stranger'. Still from YouTube

VANCOUVER – Colin Easton spent 2014 doing something most people feel very uncomfortable doing – he made it his mission every day to talk to a perfect stranger and tell their story.

He called it The Stranger Project.

“I think people are afraid to be the first to make a move to connect, not out selfishness, but perhaps not wanting to come across as rude or nosey,” said Easton in May. “I find that even before I started this project, without specific questions, people will be friendly and chat while waiting to pay for groceries, or on the bus. It only takes one person to start a conversation.”

Now, Easton’s friend and director Kate Green, is making a documentary about the project. “She’s a friend of mine I’ve known for a great number of years,” said Easton. “She is the producer and director and it’s her vision.”

“It will help pay for post-production costs,” said Easton. “And for crew, editing, publicity and film festival submissions.”

Easton wants to help change peoples’ perceptions about speaking to strangers and reaching out to people you don’t know. “Everybody actually does want to talk,” he said.

“Now that there seems to be a lot of interest in what I’m doing, it’s pretty mind-blowing.”

Easton said he has not yet decided if he is going to continue the project in 2015, but will likely announce his decision on CKNW on Monday.
