MONTREAL – A Montreal newspaper is reporting the Canadian Forces has bought nearly 1.5 million condoms for its soldiers in the past five years.
A military spokesman has told La Presse it is cheaper to buy condoms than to treat soldiers for sexually transmitted diseases.

The newspaper says it obtained the number of prophylactics through an access-to-information request.
The documents indicate the condoms cost 12 cents each – for a total of more than $177,000 over the five-year span.
Lt.-Col. James Anderson says the practice of giving condoms to soldiers has been in place since the First World War.
He also says chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the military.
