HALIFAX – The federal Fisheries Department has prohibited the harvesting of certain shellfish in parts of Nova Scotia.
The department says recent heavy rains have likely to contaminated the shellfish with increased levels of bacterial shellfish poisoning.

The ban applies to oysters, clams, mussels and quahogs – but not scallops.
The areas affected include much of Yarmouth, Shelburne, Queens and Lunenburg counties, as well as the Halifax Regional Municipality and Guysborough County.
