From scraps to style: Baby Steinberg crafts custom creations from fabric remnants

TORONTO – Scraps of fabric likely bound for the bin were repurposed into custom creations by Baby Steinberg, who once again brought her unconventional approach to eco-friendly style at LG Fashion Week on Friday.

During her previous Fashion Week foray last fall, the Toronto-based designer took the concept of green garments into an altogether different domain, fashioning avant-garde designs from such found items as keys, wine corks, garbage bags and coffee filters.

For her latest line, “Remnants,” Steinberg gathered strips of colourful fabric discarded at manufacturing companies in her native Brazil and upcycled them into crafty new designs.

From braided straps to fringe dangling from tiered dresses, plain and patterned remnants were employed in a variety of fashions.

Rosettes were prominently featured, notably in the intricate rope-like weaving dotting the bodice of a red asymmetrical hemmed dress or encircling the neckline of a visibly heavy one-shouldered number.

The designer mixed and matched contrasting fabrics, with both a floral-patterned ruched dress and another thickly woven strapless number trimmed with clouds of tulle.

Several dresses had a looser ’20s-era silhouette, channelling cabaret and cocktail hour with sequined and feathered embellishments adorning the garments.

After the designer took her final bow, the runway show transformed into an installation with models posed on white, fabric-framed podiums positioned along the catwalk.
