MapleLeaf Foods has announced a three-year 560-million dollar restructuring plan expected to boost competitiveness and profitability.
That means MapleLeaf is closing its processing plant in North Battleford but will expand and update its plant in Saskatoon.
President Michael McCain says consolidation is necessary if the company wants to continue to compete against U.S. food processors.

Employees who are laid off will be encouraged to apply at the new plants, but McCain would not say whether those employees would be given priority over other applicants.
The decision by MapleLeaf to close its processing plant in North Battleford has Saskatchewan’s Liberals renewing their call for more local entrepreneurship and innovation.
Leader Ryan Bater says the closure of the company’s bacon plant and the cutting of 330 jobs are a sad loss for North Battleford.
He says accountants in Toronto should not be deciding the fate of communities across Canada.
Overall, MapleLeaf is cutting more than 15-hundred jobs in four provinces as it consolidates its distribution business.
The restructuring and reductions are expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
