Slick road conditions this morning as snow sweeps through GTA

WATCH: You can’t deny it anymore. Winter has arrived. Most GTA residents woke up to find their yards and cars covered in a blanket of snow.

TORONTO – A number of collisions were reported around the Greater Toronto Area Monday morning due to the slick weather conditions on roads and highways.

A multi-vehicle crash closed the westbound lanes of Highway 401 at Guelph Line for several hours and reopened at 8: 40 a.m.

Another vehicle veered into a ditch on southbound Highway 427 just south of Derry Road in Mississauga around 5:23 a.m.

The City of Toronto says one round of salt has been applied to expressways and arterial roads overnight.

Ontario Provincial Police say there were also a number of single vehicle collisions reported on Highway 400 just prior to the morning rush hour.

Meanwhile, the southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway were closed from Richmond just after midnight, as well as the northbound lanes from Lakeshore, due to icy conditions.

Maintenance crews were called in to de-ice the roadway which was reopened about an hour later.

Police are warning drivers to exercise caution on the roads, maintain a good stopping distance between vehicles, and most importantly to slow down.

Authorities say the first sign of snow sometimes means motorists forget to adjust their driving habits to the appropriate weather condition.
