Parents of toddler injured in Laval daycare crash speak out for first time

LAVAL — Quan Huynh and his wife Kim Hoang clearly remember getting the call from police last November 12. Their daughter had been seriously injured in a car accident, while at daycare.

“I remember there was a police woman, she told me, ‘Your child has had a car accident,'” said Huynh.

“I said, ‘What kind of car accident, I would like to know.'”

His wife was also at first confused.

“In my head, how could there be a car accident?” said Kim Hoang.

“My daughter’s daycare didn’t have a scheduled outing.”

Both parents thought police made a mistake at first, but as it turns out little Tiffany was one of three children hit by a car that crashed into the daycare during nap time.

“Her face was stuck under the tire at least three to four minutes, without breathing because her nose was stuck right in the tire,” said Huynh.

Tiffany’s parents still remember seeing their daughter for the first time in hospital, with her head swollen to nearly twice its normal size.

“It was so shocking, it was so sad and frustrating and we didn’t know if we would lose our child or not,” said Huynh, who found the hardest part was not being able to hold his daughter while she was recovering in the intensive care unit.

“I went to see my child and, oh my, you see, normally you just hug your kid, but I walked in there, and the only place I can hold my kid is her hand,” said Huynh.

Tiffany spent twee weeks at Ste-Justine Hospital and after three long days of not knowing, her parents finally learned that she would survive without any sign of brain damage.

“She’s very good today, no medication, the only thing is we feel she’s so scared, I don’t know why,” said her father who worries about her anxiety.

The biggest concern now is that Tiffany may need surgery someday to repair a hole in her skull, as a result of the injuries.

But one year after the accident, the family feels fortunate for everything. Her father is grateful for everyone who helped save Tiffany’s life.
