Saskatchewan born auctioneer trying for ‘world’s best’

Some kids want to be firefighters when they grow up, and others dream of being rockstars.

But one young Saskatchewan man is sticking true to his roots.

At just 22 years old, Brennin Jack is Canada’s top cattle auctioneer.

Now, he’s heading down to North Dakota in hopes of qualifying to become one of the best in the world.

“I’m hoping for first,” said Jack.

“And the bragging rights.”

This Thursday, Jack will be one of 14 competitors in the 2012 World Livestock Auctioneer Competition Quarter-Finals.

If he is one of the top eight, Brennin will automatically move into the finals next June.

When asked what the secret is, Brennin says it’s just about sticking to what you know.

“It’s like somebody competing in American Idol, and they try to sing like Whitney Houston when they should be singing like Patsy Cline,” said Jack.

“You just can’t do something that you’re not capable of.”

But perhaps the most admirable thing about this speedy seller is his humble demeanor, and his love of the profession.

“You might find me here on a Thursday night at 2 o’clock in the morning,” said Jack.

“I’m still the craziest guy here with a big smile on my face, and everyone’s like ‘Oh you’re nuts,’ but it’s what you love to do.”

Jack heads down to North Dakota on Wednesday, and competes Thursday, October 20.
