Astronauts safely return to Earth

Watch the video above: Expedition 41 Flight Engineers Reid Wiseman of NASA, Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency and Commander Maxim Suraev of the Russian Federal Space Agency landed their Soyuz spacecraft Sunday evening in Kazakhstan.

TORONTO – After almost six months aboard the International Space Station, three astronauts returned home Sunday night.

NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, German astronaut Alexander Gerst and Russian cosmonaut Maxim Suraev — who had been on the ISS for 165 days — undocked from the space station at 7:31 EST.

Both Wiseman and Gerst were avid social media users, sharing videos and photographs of not only their experiences on the station, but also their unique view of Earth.

Their capsule landed at 10:58 p.m. EST. While on board the station, they travelled more than 112 million kilometres.

The departure of the trio marks the end of Expedition 41. The space station is currently manned by three astronauts — Barry Wilmore, Elena Serova and Alexander Samoukuyaev — who are the first half of Expedition 42.

On Nov. 23, they will be joined by their crewmates Anton Shkaplerov, Terry Virts and Samantha Cristoforetti.
