HALIFAX – Police in Halifax are warning of a phone scam that targets utility customers.

Investigators say they have received three complaints since Wednesday from local businesses who were contacted by someone posing as a utility company representative.

The caller states that the business’s account is overdue and the only way to make payment is through a pre-paid credit card.

The person provides a telephone number and instructs the business to call back with the credit card information.

Police say one business was defrauded of nearly $700.

They are urging businesses to be wary if a service provider insists on obtaining payment through a pre-paid credit card.
