CALGARY – WestJet is taking aim at fraudulent phone calls targeting its customers.

According to the Calgary-based airline, the calls have become a persistent problem.

The airline says WestJet flyers are being harassed by fraudsters who claim to represent the company, but do not.

The automated calls are using the promise of free WestJet dollars to lure customers, but the ultimate goal is to sell a vacation package in Mexico.

“We hate seeing our guests harassed this way and we desperately wish that we could just make the calls stop already,” reads a statement on WestJet’s blog.

It says the calls may appear to be local, but in fact the true origin of the call is masked with a fake phone number.

“The most difficult piece in all of this is actually identifying the company behind the phone calls. Their website has an address that appears to be in an alley in Cancun,” said the airline on its blog.

WestJet is working with police in both Canada and Mexico police to track down the fraudsters.

It’s asking customers to report the fraudulent calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the National Do Not Call Registry.
