Okanagan residents are used to seeing artificial grass on sports field, putting greens and patios.
Now it is being tested on a median in Kelowna to see if it can replace real grass.
Natural grass and plants have never grown well on a median at the intersection of Bernard Avenue and Gordon Drive so the city decided to experiment by installing some artificial turf.

By using artificial grass, the city is hoping to save significantly on water and maintenance costs.
Although cities in Eastern Canada have been covering medians with artificial turf for years, this is the first time it has been used in the Okanagan.
The turf is expected to have a lifespan of 8 to 12 years.
The cost of covering a typical city median with artificial grass is typically between $7,000 and $10,000.
If the test project proves successful, the city will install artificial turf at other intersections.
