Prime minister makes surprise appearance at Alberta MP’s retirement party

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made a stop in Lethbridge, Alta., to wish a former colleague well in his retirement.

Rick Casson served 14 years as Lethbridge’s member of Parliament before deciding not to run in the last federal election.

Harper’s attendance at Casson’s retirement party was kept a surprise until just before the program began Friday night.

Harper also shared a few words about the guest of honour, remarking that Casson earned the confidence, respect and friendship of everyone he worked with in Parliament.

He also made mention of Casson being named to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, something very rare for someone who has not served in cabinet.

That distinction means Casson will be known as the “Honourable Rick Casson” for life, and Harper says he “can’t think of anyone for whom that title is more deserving.”
