Marathon raises money for literacy programming and sends message about health

MONCTON – People participating in the Legs for Literacy marathon say the event goes beyond funding literacy programs; it also sends a message about health.

The marathon, which was held Sunday, was the first marathon for Kevin Donelle, who has lost more than 100 pounds over the last four years through running.

“I lost most of the weight through running. [It’s also important] to watch what a person eats and [change] your diet,” he said. “Basically, a whole change of lifestyle is what I’ve gone through in the last four years.”

But participants said Legs for Literacy encourages active living and a healthy lifestyle.

Moncton firefighter Mike Richard raised about $2,000 for the event, which he hopes encourages others to make healthy choices.

“I think it’s great and it’s an active lifestyle that should be supported,” he said.

Race director Marie Wilson said about 3,600 people participated in this year’s race, adding she hopes the event continues to attract more people.

“Obesity levels are scary and diabetes levels are scary so the more people that are getting out and getting active the better,” she said. “We love it that so many are inspired and participate in our event.”
