UPDATE: Narcotics stolen from Saskatoon City Hospital identified

SASKATOON – Saskatoon Police Service is now warning the public about the narcotics stolen from City Hospital over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Police say the large quantity of narcotics that were taken from the site have been identified as Hydromorphone, otherwise known as Dilaudid, and morphine and may be for sale on the street packaged in vials and ampules.

The drugs, typically used during operating room procedures, can cause serious injury or death if taken.

Last week, Global News reported that police were made aware of the stolen narcotics on the morning of Oct. 11 at approximately 8:45 a.m.

According to police, a release was not sent in connection to the incident because it was considered theft under $5,000.

At that time police said they were concerned given the nature of the theft and hadn’t ruled out staff.

Global News also reached out to officials with the Saskatoon Health Region but a comment was denied.

Police remind the public not to take any drug that has not been prescribed by a doctor or pharmacist.
