“I wasn’t even mad at them” – Calgary man accused of killing Billy Powers and his wife

The trial of the man accused of killing former sportscaster Billy Powers and his wife Donna Lee Powers is underway in Calgary.

The couple was stabbed to death in July of 2013.

Their bodies were found in their home.

Derek Puffer, the son of Donna Lee Powers, is charged with two counts of 2nd degree murder.

Family and friends attending the trial said it was tough hearing the details.

“Instinctively we knew it was a terrible crime,” said sportscaster Mark Stephen, who knew Billy Powers well.

“But to see it written in black and white and coming out in open court proceedings…it’s quite shocking and disturbing,” he said.

Puffer doesn’t deny killing the couple.

What’s in question is his mental state at the time at the time of the murders.

In a videotaped interview, Puffer told Calgary Police “I just kind of blacked out there. I did a bunch of irrational things. It wasn’t me. I just lost control of who I was. I wasn’t even mad at them,” he said.

He told police voices in his head told him to be naked, which he was when he was arrested.

The trial resumes Tuesday with more evidence expected from the taped interview with police.
