Remnants of hurricane Ophelia take parting shot at southern Newfoundland

BELLEORAM, N.L. – The remnants of hurricane Ophelia took a parting shot at southern Newfoundland today, dumping heavy rain and forcing a handful of evacuations.

A meteorologist at the Canadian Hurricane Centre says data indicates Ophelia had weakened to a post-tropical storm when it made landfall on the Avalon Peninsula.

Bob Robichaud says winds in the region were gusting to around 90 kilometres an hour and by 9 a.m. up to 60 millimetres of rain had fallen in some areas.

He says the worst was over by around noon.

In the south coast community of Belleoram (bull-ore-um), Mayor Steward May says town emergency officials had to evacuate five homes after part of the bank of a roadway was washed away.

May says a number of rocks came tumbling down into the community, making it difficult for some people to get into or out of their homes.

There were no reports of injuries in the harbour community of 450 people but the RCMP confirmed five houses were damaged, one of them seriously.

On the Bonavista Peninsula, police issued warnings to motorists after the storm led to damage on several roads.
