Hundreds of UBC students came out in protest of a stiff 20 per cent hike for on-campus rent planned for next year.
Many say it is an increase they simply can’t afford.
Already on tight budgets, students are looking at paying upwards of $778 a month for a single room starting next year.
The rate hike applies only to winter session students who attend school from September to April.
In addition, new international students will be hit with a 10 per cent jump in tuition.
Already, the cost of one year of undergrad with housing is near $40,000 for those students.
UBC says the prices are still below off campus rents.
The University insists the extra money is needed to create more learning spaces and for hiring more faculty.
