MIAMI – Forecasters say Hurricane Gonzalo is expected to become a major hurricane in coming hours as it continues to strengthen over the open Atlantic north of Puerto.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Gonzalo’s top sustained winds have risen early Tuesday to nearly 110 mph (175 kph) as it moves away from the Virgin Islands. It says Gonzalo is centred about 140 miles (225 kilometres) north of San Juan, Puerto Rico, heading to the northwest at 13 mph (20 kph).
A tropical storm warning has been discontinued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A hurricane warning for the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla has been changed to a tropical storm warning.
The storm pummeled Antigua and nearby islands with high winds and heavy rain earlier this week.
