Moncton’s Castle Manor to become condos

MONCTON, N.B. – The project manager for a new condo project in Moncton says Castle Manor’s best years are yet to come.

Jay Tse is a Shediac contractor, part of a family business group who purchased the some 100-year-old building, that went up for sale earlier this year for almost $700,000.

Tse says Castle manor has potential as a condominium.

“I think my priority is to fix this beautiful grand lady,” he said, noting their plans include installing a glass roof and integrating an old chapel into a condo.

“This is the castle,” he said. “This is the only one here.”

In its long history, Castle Manor has served Moncton residents in many capacities including an orphanage and seniors’ home.

Moncton councillor Paulette Theriault says it has deep roots in the city.

“I can’t imagine the city of Moncton without this incredible building,” she said.

Theriault says the city is planning to work closely with the new owners to ensure its structural heritage remains intact.

The group is expecting to invest at least $5.5 million into the building and are hoping to sell 14 units.

Each unit will go for $270 – $800,000 each.

Despite the price, Tse says his group won’t make a lot of money on the investment, but says it’s worth it to keep a castle in Moncton.

“You build a lot of things but this castle stays the way it is for over 100 years and I would like to help it along for the next 100 years,” he said.
