Fire marshal calls for change around fireworks at stadium

Firefighters now know the cause of the scoreboard fire at Friday night’s football game.

Hot molten debris from the fireworks landed in a case which held the remote wireless system. Styrofoam in that case then caught on fire.

Regina’s fire marshal, Randy Ryba, says the case never should have been open in the first place, but might have been blown open from the wind.

He wants new safety measures put in place.

“I want somebody on watch at all times at every corner of that stadium where there are pyrotechnics being launched, and extinguishers more readily available,” he told reporters Tuesday.

Firefighters do a walk-through of the stadium before every major event, and the deputy was on scene when the fire started.

It only burned for a few minutes before it was extinguished by city facility operators. The game was not delayed.
