Fish thought to have disappeared from N.B. river caught by conservationists

MONCTON, N.B. – A native fish species believed to be absent from New Brunswick’s Petitcodiac River for many years appears to have returned.

Members of the Petitcodiac Fish Recovery Coalition report a shad fish was pulled from a trap near Salisbury on Wednesday.

The group has been monitoring fish found in the river since the causeway gates were opened last year,

It says so far all expected fish species have been captured, although some are in very low number.

Petitcodiac Riverkeeper Marco Morency is thrilled with the news and says this catch means the restoration project is delivering the benefits conservationists had hoped for.
