WATCH: Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra music director Alexander Mickelthwate conducts an entertaining interview.

WINNIPEG – You don’t have to like classical music to enjoy the way WSO music director Alexander Mickelthwate conducts an interview.

The world-renowned musician, who looks more like a rock star than a symphony orchestra conductor (his wife’s a fashion designer), visited the Global Winnipeg Morning News to promote the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s 67th season.

You might yawn, but the conductor’s waving hands punctuate an enthusiastic German-accented commentary about appearing at Carnegie Hall and working with Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Ros and former Guess Who and BTO rocker Randy Bachman.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

See the full interview above, or put on Dvorak’s New World Symphony – the WSO is launching this year’s season with the piece – and scroll through Mickelthwate’s gestures below.
