A great ending to a story Global News first brought you two years ago. A once neglected horse with a horrific injury has now been adopted.

Pearl was a neglected horse that was rescued two years ago. At the time, she had an infected, golf-ball sized hole in her head, but she’s been nursed back to health, and on Tuesday she was adopted.

“It’s a happy day and a sad day,” admits Susan Fyfe of the Rescue 100 Foundation. “Pearl’s been with us for quite a while and has been through a lot.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The quarter horse first came to Keno Hills stable nearly two years ago neglected and abused.
Through the Rescue 100 Foundation, Fyfe and volunteers have nursed Pearl back to health. They even raised thousands of dollars for facial surgery for Pearl. Shortly after, the wound opened up again. But experts decided another surgery would be too much for her.

“They recommended she not do it,” says Fyfe, “That she had a 50% chance of success. So we felt she’d been through enough pain.”

Pearl has come a long way from the scared and nervous horse she was when she first arrived.
When Shelby Gross and her mother, Candy Richardson, heard her story, they wanted to meet her. It was love at first sight.

“When we came to meet her, we bought our whole bucket of treats. We gave her the whole bucket.” Gross says laughing.
“Animals kind of choose humans as their owners. It’s a good fit,” says Richardson.

But sadly, as Pearl leaves, Fyfe’s work continues. Another 10 horses, neglected and needing care, recently arrived last Thursday.
