The University of Saskatchewan is celebrating today with the opening of the new College Quarter undergraduate residence along with a generous donation towards the construction of a new graduate residence.

The new undergraduate residence currently houses 360 students. When it is completed in next fall, it will house 800 undergraduates.

“We are pleased to open new housing for students, welcoming them to campus not only to study, but also to experience all that university life has to offer,” said Peter MacKinnon, U of S President.

The donation of 6.5-million dollars for a new “Graduate House” was made by U of S alumnus Dr. Russell Morrison and his wife, Dr. Katherine Morrison.

The new graduate building is in the initial stages of construction and will house 262 students when it is completed in 2013.

“Partnerships with the province, the City of Saskatoon and private donors have made it possible for us to build new residences and make considerable progress toward our overall goal of housing approximately 15 per cent of students,” said MacKinnon.

The completion of both residents will bring the total number of students housing on campus to just under 2.3-thousand students or 12 per cent of the student population.

Opening south of College Drive, the new College Quarter residence will consist of four buildings that offer undergraduate students with apartment-style suites with furnished kitchens and living spaces.
