A 59-year-old Strathcona County man is dead after the convertible he was driving hit a heavy-duty steel trailer left abandoned on a Sherwood Park highway Saturday evening.
Shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, Strathcona County Emergency Services and Strathcona County RCMP responded to a report of a crash on Wye Road, between Range Road 212 and 213. A late model Saab convertible sedan was travelling westbound on Wye Road when it hit a trailer that was left on the driving lanes of the highway, police say. The trailer had rear loading ramps and appeared to be used for transporting heavy equipment.
The convertible rolled and shot into the air before it came to rest in the north ditch.
The driver was freed from the convertible by another motorist who witnessed the crash. The motorist administered first aid until EMS and STARS air ambulance arrived. The driver was pronounced dead on scene.
Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash. The name of the driver is being withheld until family can be notified.
