John Tory continues to lead over rivals Ford, Chow: Poll

TORONTO – Mayoral candidate John Tory is riding high in public opinion with a significant gap over his rivals Rob Ford and Olivia Chow, according to a new poll.

The survey conducted on Monday puts Tory in the lead with 40 per cent support, Ford in second with 28 per cent, and Chow in third at 21 per cent.

David Soknacki received 6 per cent support but he bowed out of the campaign Tuesday night.

However, results from those polled say Soknacki’s approval rating is actually higher than that of Chow at 58 per cent compared to her 50 per cent.

The numbers grow even larger for Tory in a head-to-head battle with Ford with 57 per cent support versus 30 per cent for the mayor.

Tory also leads in every region of the city.

The former provincial Progressive Conservative leader is also ahead with regards to being the best to handle the budget (36 per cent), vision for the city (36 per cent), getting councillors to work together (42 per cent), and leaving the city in better shape (32 per cent).

“This may be an indication that voters are finally paying attention to the “Ford Math”, which rarely adds up, according to the experts,” said Forum Research President, Dr. Lorne Bozinoff in a media release.

The poll also indicates that transit remains the most urgent issue facing Torontonians (37 per cent), followed by keeping taxes low (17 per cent), and rebuilding Toronto’s image (10 per cent.)

A Nanos Research poll conducted last week had Tory with 42 per cent support, Ford at 28 per cent, and Chow at 26 per cent.

The Forum Research poll was conducted among 1,069 residents using an automated interactive voice phone calls with a margin of error or +/- 3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
