CALGARY- A popular Calgary lake is scheduled to reopen this weekend, following a drowning earlier this week.
Sikome Lake was closed on Monday, after a 29-year-old man who did not know how to swim fell out of a dinghy. A body was recovered on Wednesday.
“There is an inherent risk associated with water-based activities,” said Minister of Tourism Richard Starke, in a release. He added the tragedy has prompted a review of safety procedures.
“Our review will determine whether changes are needed to help visitors stay safe. If changes are needed, we will make them.”
Staff at the lake are trained in lifesaving skills such as first aid and CPR. Life-jackets are also available to rent, but it’s not believed that the drowning victim was wearing one at the time.
Sikome Lake is scheduled to reopen on Sunday, August 17 at 10 a.m.
