Winnipeg linebacker Joe Lobendahn took top CFL defensive honours

TORONTO – Winnipeg linebacker Joe Lobendahn took top defensive honours, Montreal kicker/punter Shawn Whyte got the special teams nod and Calgary receiver Johnny Forzani was the top Canadian.

Lobendahn took defensive honours for his seven tackles and one forced fumble in the Blue Bombers’ 30-27 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. With the game tied 17-17 early in the third, Lobendahn prevented Ticats touchdown, punching the ball out of wide receiver Chris Williams’ hands just before he reached the goal-line.

Calgary Stampeders quarterback Henry Burris was named the CFL’s offensive player of the week Tuesday. 

Burris was 26-of-42 for a career-high 422 yards and three touchdowns in the Stampeders’ 38-31 win over the Montreal Alouettes. He also had three carries for 29 yards and ran in the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. 

Shawn Whyte connected on three field goals, three converts, averaged 45.6 yards on seven punts and added a single. 

Meanwhile, Forzani was named the top Canadian after hauling in six passes for a career-high 101 yards to go along with the first two touchdowns of his career.
