CALGARY – Work on replacing the deck of the northbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail over the Calf Robe Bridge was stopped on Sunday.

Police initially shut down the site following reports that a piece of concrete had fallen from the bridge.

Rafters floating along the Bow River reported the incident on Sunday morning.

Officials believe it happened as crews were jack-hammering the concrete and small pieces fell.

“They put up plywood but there was a gap and the concrete fell through the ground or the bridge and to the ground and water below,” says A/Sgt. Brad Hyde.

No one was injured but Occupational Health and Safety is investigating.

Officials with CTS Constructors would not talk to Global News about the incident.

It stopped work on the northbound lanes of Deerfoot which have been affecting drivers all summer.

The shutdown is not expected to affect traffic any further.

The work is scheduled to be completed by mid-October.
