Police say charges are pending against another inmate at the facility.
Edmonton’s Police Chief, Rod Knecht appeared on Global’s Morning News on Wednesday, and said that although the homicide rate is high, Edmontonians don’t need to be concerned.
“We know that 50% of them are people that know each other quite well. 50% of them are happening behind closed doors, they are not in public places so you know Edmonton is a safe city, it’s a big city. We have a lot of social problems here like all big cities do and we collectively have to respond to those things.” Knecht said. “Yes the police have to investigate, but we need help from the community to prevent those crimes.”
Montgrand’s death marks the second homicide at the facility this year, and Edmonton’s 34th of 2011.
