Construction officially begins on Toronto aquarium near CN Tower

TORONTO – Construction is underway to build a $130 million aquarium between the CN Tower and Rogers Centre in downtown Toronto.

The project officially broke ground Wednesday and is designed to attract tourists to Toronto when is opens in June 2013.

Visitors will be able to see 40 species of fish, including sharks but not great whites.

The project is generating 600 jobs and millions of dollars in tax money for all three levels of government.

Mayor Rob Ford says it’s fitting that Toronto’s newest tourist attraction will be located at the base of the CN Tower.

The aquarium is touted as one of the largest in North America, with a capacity of 5.7-million litres and room for 13,000 marine inhabitants.
