VANCOUVER – Prince Rupert Port Authority confirms that bulk coal carrier Amakusa Island ran aground late Monday night near Prince Rupert.

The ship was about 15 km from the Ridley Island Port complex and had to be re-floated and escorted to anchorage by tugs.

The Port Authority says there were no injuries and no discharge of material from the ship.

The Transportation Safety Board is now investigating. It is not known what caused the accident.

About two years ago a container ship ran aground in the same area while attempting to avoid a rogue fishing vessel.
