Algae bloom turns Burrard Inlet blood red

There’s an unusual but completely natural phenomenon that’s turning part of English Bay and Burrard Inlet blood red.

Numerous people have contacted the authorities concerned it was a fuel spill from a cruise ship but Port Metro Vancouver says it’s a giant red algae bloom.

Massive blooms like this are a product of the right combination of water temperature, tide and timing.

The red bloom could last several days and is not considered dangerous.
